Why is a PhD important? There are three ways to look at doing a PhD: (1) Whether the PhD is important to the individual getting the degree, (2) whether the PhD is important for the university, and (3) whether the PhD is important to the state.

Let’s start off with why a PhD is important to the individual. There are several reasons why people might get a PhD:
For fun and desire to learn.
To improve their social economic status.
To get a terminal degree.

Why are PhDs important for the university?
Universities generally look better if they have more PhDs that they are granting. This allows them to attract better students and eventually get more resources.
Additionally, the academic environment puts an emphasis on generating new ideas, and discovery of new concepts. The more PhDs that are obtained at the university, the higher the academic rank of the university giving the degrees.

What about the state or society?
PhDs are important for the state and society because discovery and search for new is strongly tied to economic production, the advancement of economic surplus in a country.
Having a better educated workforce also allows generally to improve the social economic status of other citizens. If someone finds a cure for career, then the knowledge spillover effects of the new knowledge into other parts of the economy is generally quite high.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
