The answer to whether a PhD is prestigious or not, really depends on a lot of factors.
It depends on the PhD degree and the subject manner. If you did a PhD in a topic that does not matter to everyday life, people will likely not see the value of the topic.
Prestige depends on the university where you got the PhD. If you got a PhD from a highly regarded university, it does not matter what the PhD is in, you will likely get a lot of prestige from that university.
It depends on the peer group. Some people do not understand what it means to do a PhD, and it is difficult to explain what it is. If people do not get what you do with a PhD, they are likely not going to care that you actually have the PhD.
Prestige depends on the country. We know that status depends a lot on the country you are from. In some countries, having a PhD will be more highly regarded than others.
It depends on how you view your degree. It really is a person point of view. If you do not feel that your PhD was worth the time, than you are likely not going to see my prestige in the PhD.
