A fan asks “what is your opinion on leaving a PhD program with a Masters degree (I am in the biological sciences)? NOTE: Only disclose who you are if you feel comfortable.

I went into my program not really knowing what I wanted to do after graduation. I've since decided, I don't want to stay in academia but would like to work in a clinical lab/industry as part of a research team. As a professor, what is your opinion on leaving a program with an MS after kind of realizing you can do what you want to do without a PhD”

What I would do is treat this like any other major life decision. I would sit down, provide several alternatives, and rank order those alternatives.

There are couple of things that I would suggest that you need to get better information. You point out that you went into the program not knowing what you wanted to do after you graduate, and that you don’t like the lab part of your research team.

I think you need to have a better idea of what you like to do with your life, and do that. Here is one trick - look to see what you spent the most amount of money on in the past 6 months, and or the items from the past 6 months that gave you the most amount of joy. Is there a way that you could do that in industry or academia?

I would also suggest that you making a decision based on your manager / supervisor. Most people say they don’t like what they do because of their direct supervisors. You should look to see if their are other places in academia that give you joy.

Finally, if it is the task of academia that you don’t like, I would not leave academia until you have a job lined up. You can start by picking the thing that gives you joy and start looking for high-earning jobs in that area.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
