From my experience, your intention to do a PhD matters much more than the graduate program that you are pursuing.
Indeed, there is a whole psychological theory that helps to explain your motivation to pursue a task. It is called the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991). This theory explains why people actually pursue an activity and complete the activity. It has been used to explain why it is so difficult to start an exercise regime, stop smoking, or do many other tasks.
The idea is that the intentions to pursue an activity often has a large impact on the executing on the activity. Generally, there are 3 factors that determine your intention: (1) attitude towards the behavior, (2) perceived behavior control over the behavior, and (3) social norms around the behavior.
These intentions lead a person to perform an action if given the opportunity to pursue that behavior.
What does this all mean for doing a PhD? If you want to have stronger intentions to pursue and complete your PhD and do research, start by actually liking what you are doing, realize that you can actually complete the PhD, and find a good group of family and friends that will be supportive of your PhD journey.
If you can’t find these elements in your immediate surrounding, you are going to have to find a group of people to help you. You should also work on self-visualization techniques to complete your PhD.
