There are many things that you learn when you get a PhD, but most people do not readily discuss this issues. I thought I would disclose some of the secrets that you learn when you get a PhD. Few people will be so open about these secrets.

We really do not know much. You will be surprised to find out just how little we know about the world around us. One would think that we know a lot about the world around us, given that science is a few hundred years old, but much of what we know is based on rules of thumb and heuristics, and there are many things we still cannot explain.

2. A considerable part of science is poorly done. It is surprising how much work that is required to do good science. Most people find it difficult to do good science. People have strong incentives to publish, rather than to do good research. Moreover, what we knew even a few years ago is far less than even the last few years.

3. Science is based on reciprocity, but there are strong incentives to work self-interestedly in the short term. Adam Grant’s book “Givers and Takers” describes the behavior very well, and that he points out that people tend to take in the short term because they think they get further ahead. And, they do in the short term, but in the long-term, the givers have more opportunities.

4. Science is continuously evolving. What was state of the art even ten years ago is likely out of date today, or can even be irrelevant.

5. Science is very thin. You might think there is a big complex working on science, but it generally is only a few people. The friendships and relationships that you start today will last a lifetime, as science is an very small world. You can often name all of the people in the entire world that do work in your area on one hand.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
