What are Organisation Structures and how are they created?

The below Foundation Objects are comprised in the Organisation structure:
• Legal Entity
• Business Unit
• Division
• Department
• Location
• Cost Centre

The above objects can be either removed if they are not needed or re-purposed in the structure. Re-purposing means we can change a Department to a sub-Division and use a Department as a sub-Division. The Metadata Framework can be used to add new objects within the structure.

A Legal Entity cannot have a parent of type Legal Entity. But a Division can belong to multiple Business Units and a Department can belong to multiple Divisions. Both Division and Department can have parent of the same type. This creates a hierarchy of these object types.

1) Legal Entity
A Legal Entity is also referred to as Company. It contains the definitions for all legal entities that are part of the organisation. Every employee must have a Legal Entity assigned when he is being hired or setup in the system. This is similar to what happens is the real life.

2) Business Unit
A Business Unit focuses on a specific business function, for example manufacturing, sales, or marketing. It represents a segment of a Legal Entity and is below it.

Division
3) A Division is a division of a Business Unit. It can be used directly as a Division of a Legal Entity as well if required. This is called as re-purposing.

4) Department
Divisions are broken down into one or more Departments. It is often the lowest denominator of the organisation structure.

5) Location
The Location is a physical location which is used to identify the employee’s location.
6) Cost Centre
The units that account for business costs are usually the Cost Centres. Though they are the part of the organisation in which they reside, cost centres represent how the costs of an employee is designated in the organisation structure. Cost Centre are used as part of the organisation structure as well. They can have parent Cost Centres to create a hierarchy.
