Now that you've studied up on your state's gun laws as Jeff outlined in our last episode, what about when you travel to a different state with a firearm? While there are some commonalities between various states' gun laws, the best resource for current, up-to-date information about another state's firearm laws is to contact its Attorney General's office. The AG's staff should be able to answer your questions and/or point you to online resources that will tell you what you need to know. IMPORTANT: find out if that state has concealed carry permit RECIPROCITY with your state. If you choose to carry there, you'll need to know that state's concealed carry, self-defense, and deadly force laws as well as you know your own. DON'T carry if you're at all unsure about the firearm / carry laws in the state you're visiting. If you must travel through a gun-restrictive state, minimize the amount of time you stop during your trip through. Create a buffer so you are clearly not "carrying" the firearm on your person by putting it in a locked container, separate from ammunition, in the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle. Avoid traveling to states with highly restrictive gun laws or high penalties for breaking their firearm laws. Or if you really have to travel there, leave your gun at home. The goal is to be fully informed BEFORE you enter another state with a gun because there's no excuse for not knowing the law.
