You've got your new daily defense gun, you've taken training classes, you've doing your dryfire training protocol, and now you're ready to visit the range on your own for your first live-fire practice session. Aside from your gun, some magazines, and ammo, what else do you need to bring? Hearing and eye protection, holster, magazine pouches, a good first aid kit, and a range bag to put it all in. It's also good to have a PLAN for what you want to accomplish at the range. Bring a notebook to take notes and track observable, measurable, and repeatable results from your practice. Get familiar with your range's specific rules and protocols. You don't want to be the guy/gal who gets in trouble for violating a range safety rule! After you're done, clean up after yourself and "police your brass" (collect your spent shell casings). Aside from having fun, come up with a practice routine for your range visits. Having a plan for how you spend your time, money, and ammo is a big help. Work toward a goal of improving your performance in specific aspects of shooting. Range practice requires ammunition, and more ammo and range time is better. To plan ahead and organize your training sessions, consider setting up an annual "ammo budget."
