You can travel on commercial airlines with firearms. It can be a fairly easy and hassle-free experience IF you follow the law, the TSA regulations, and your particular airline's rules. Guns need to be carried in hard-sided cases that cannot be pried open. If the TSA agents can pry the case open even a little, that can be grounds to reject your case. Be prepared to unlock the case if the TSA wants to inspect what's inside. TSA agents can cut the locks if they need to open the case but can't locate you. If you use special TSA-approved locks, TSA agents have master keys that let them open the case without destroying your locks. You CAN transport up to 11 lbs. of ammunition - with restrictions, which Jeff explains. Most important, always make sure the firearms are UNLOADED before you leave home. Arrive at the airport EARLY because you will have to go through the traditional ticket counter. When you arrive at the counter, tell the agent you would like to declare unloaded firearms in your checked bags. After you've checked in, Jeff recommends remaining near the ticket counter for about 10 minutes; he explains WHY. "Sanitize" your carry-on bag to make sure there are NO firearms, magazines, or loose ammo in it. If the case with your guns in it gets lost, follow the airline's lost-bag procedure, and be sure to tell them there's a firearm in the missing bag.
