Firearm safety is an essential element of being a responsible gun owner. When you live with guns in the house, ALWAYS CHOOSE SAFETY. Your home defense gun should be kept loaded but secured. All other guns should be stored unloaded. And except for your home-defense gun, ammunition storage should be separate from firearms. Be thoroughly familiar with how each of your guns operates. The more you KNOW about a gun's operation, the less likely you'll have a negligent discharge. Avoid UNNECESSARY handling of a gun. Most negligent discharges away from a shooting range occur when the user handles a gun without a clear purpose. There are lots of options to store firearms securely in the home: gun safes, gun lockers, quick-access lock boxes. Which one you choose depends on your needs. Example: Is quick access important? A safe doesn't have to be a big, floor-standing behemoth. And the old-fashioned mechanical, dial-and-tumblers lock isn't the only means of access now. There are electronic keypads, biometrics, even Bluetooth-controlled access from your phone.
Identify who in your household should have access to a firearm. It should be a short list. You, your spouse, other adults in the house, but NOT children or neighbors or non-family members. BE STRICT. Sometimes you may see another person exhibiting poor firearm safety behavior. You can try to intervene and explain how to be safe, or you may have to just leave the area.
