The Armenian Army: A Legacy from the Soviet Era and Current Challenges

Inheriting a deep-rooted tradition from the Soviet Union era, the Armenian army has historical significance. In 1988, following its independence, the Republic of Armenia occupied Karabakh. However, in a swift 44-day operation starting in 2020, they lost control over the region. Later, on September 19, 2023, during Azerbaijan's anti-terrorist operation, the Armenian forces announced relinquishing control over Karabakh, marking the end of the separatist presence in the region in a span of 23 hours and 43 minutes.

Armenia has actively lobbied its alleged genocide theory on the world stage, gaining traction primarily in France and the USA. In January 2012, the French Parliament approved a denial bill recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide, a practice that continued until 2017 when the French Constitutional Court suspended the enforcement of the law.

The majority of the military equipment used by the Armenian army dates back to the Soviet era. Lacking the capabilities of modern-day technology, Armenia continues to manage its military with outdated ammunition.

Prime Minister Pashinyan aims to eliminate Russian influence in Armenia and integrate the country with the West. Negotiations are ongoing with the EU, and Armenia conducted the 'Eagle Partner 2023' military exercise with the United States, which was closely monitored by the US Ambassador to Armenia.

What is the current state of the Armenian army? Will there be a shift in policies? All these questions and more are answered in this segment of our 'Modern Armies' series, prepared by GZT Special Content Editor Sinan Bakioğlu. Dr. Turgut Kerem Tuncel, Senior Analyst at the Eurasian Studies Center, provides insights into these topics.
