The Suez Crisis, Six-Day War, Yom Kippur War, and many other crises experienced by Egypt led the country to try to address the shortcomings of its army after each conflict. Due to its intelligence weaknesses in all wars, it increased the importance it gave to its domestic and foreign services.

On June 5, 1967, Israel initiated a war that would last for six days with a surprise attack on neighboring Arab countries. After six days in which 17,000 people died, Israel significantly expanded its territory by capturing strategically important regions.

Due to its sudden attacks and effective use of air forces, Egypt's air infrastructure was crippled, leaving its army unsupported. Israel annexed the Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula. After each defeat in a conflict, Egypt could reduce Israel's heavy pressure with the intervention of the international community. Its weakness in air forces was its biggest leverage against Israel.

The equipment it used and the relationships it established with other world powers through these equipment acquisitions are quite critical. Egypt acquires different systems from various countries but faces a shortage of officers who can effectively use this munition. Moreover, it struggles with the problem of making the inventories of different types work together seamlessly.

We will examine all aspects of Egypt and its army. All questions and much more are answered in the new episode of our series "Modern Armies," prepared by GZT Special Content Editor Sinan Bakioğlu, with Dr. Filiz Katman, the Director of the Energy Policies and Markets Application and Research Center at Istanbul Aydin University.
