DEDICATION
Ken Kō San (Dedication): This piece is typically played at a Buddhist altar, with incense (kō).
Oshū Sashi: The term Sashi implies dedication and offering, and this Sashi piece hails from Oshū in the northern region of Iwate Prefecture.
HOPE
San’ya Sugagaki: San’ya literally means “three valleys” and might refer to a place, or to the contour of the melody. However, in the shakuhachi tradition, the term implies supplication and focused concentration. Sugagaki designates the rhythmic character of the piece. The melody weaves in and out, up and down, and becomes a kind of trance that always gives me hope.
TRIBUTE
Zangetsu (“Morning Moon”), Opening Song: This famed classical work, composed initially for shamisen and voice in the late 18th century by Minezaki Kōtō, was intended as a memorial for one of his students. It is typically performed in a trio ensemble of shamisen, koto, and shakuhachi, with the poetic text sung by the string players. The shakuhachi melody of the opening song is so beautiful that it can take on the character of a solo piece. The accompanying song text reads (translation by Gen’ichi Tsuge):
Behind the beach pines hides the moon
The light of the moon, setting into the open sea
Departed so soon from this world of dreams,
Will awake to absolute truth,
And live in the bright lunarian palace forever.
CYCLE OF LIFE
Watermill, Prelude: Watermill is a 1972 dance choreographed by Jerome Robbins for the New York City Ballet, with music by Teiji Ito. Its theme is the cycle of life mirrored through the four seasons, from awakening in spring to rebirth the following spring. The Prelude dance features this shakuhachi solo.
