Ōshū Sashi (奥州薩字) is a traditional shakuhachi honkyoku.

Sashi ("offering, dedication”) is a piece that komusō monks performed in their practice of mendicancy, soliciting alms. This Sashi piece hails from the region of Ōshū in northern Japan. I have had the honor to perform it twice at Shōbōji temple, one of the head temples of the Sōtō sect of Zen Buddhism, located near Ōshū City in Iwate Prefecture. The most recent performance there was in November 2019 with the distinguished noh actor Sawada Koji. Ōshū Sashi and other honkyoku can be found on my CD “Offerings” (Music of the World) on YouTube, Spotify, and elsewhere.
