This is a model of the battery charger. There's a coil inside that is connected to batteries. Now, I will bring a coil that is connected to a light bulb toward the charger.

There's actually a coil like this inside a smartphone with a wireless charging feature. Running electricity through the charger's coil creates a magnetic force. Bringing the coil inside the smartphone closer to it makes electricity run through the coil, which turns on the light bulb.
Let's look at the mechanism in detail using this apparatus. This 100-bolt power supply is connected to this coil. The coil is hooked inside a metal frame. The coil and the frame are not connected to each other.
Over here is a light bulb, to which a cord is connected. Let's wrap this cord around the metal frame.
Now, let's turn on the power.

DENJIRO: The coil of the power supply and the cord of the light bulb aren't directly connected, yet the light bulb turned on.
A magnetic force is created at the core of the metal frame. This magnetic force is what allows electricity to flow through the cord and turn on the light bulb.
This is identical to the mechanism of a transformer, which can freely change voltage. Wrapping the cord a few times more around the frame will increase voltage.
This makes the light bulb glow brighter.
So, by changing the number of times the coil is wrapped, a transformer can increase or decrease voltage.
