コンセントの裏側の世界/The World of Outlets

DENJIRO: I have here some outlets that are the same as what you’d find in your home. The one on the left is 100 Volts. The one on the left is 200 V.
GIRL: I’ve never seen this kind before.
DENJIRO: Now, do you know how electricity is sent to an outlet? First, electricity generated at a power plant is delivered to a utility pole near your house at a high voltage of 6,600 V. This is then brought down to 200 V using a transformer attached to the utility pole before coming to your home. I have here a model of a transformer you’d find on a utility pole. There are two coils with a different number of turns of wire. The two wires are not connected to each other.
Changing the number of turns allows for the voltage to go down from 6,600 V to 200 V. This electricity is sent to homes using three wires: the red and black wires connected to the ends of the coil wire, and a white wire—also known as the neutral—that is connected to the middle of the coil wire. The key is that there are three wires.
By connecting the red wire and the white neutral wire, the electricity becomes 100 V. You’d get the same 100 V by connecting the white and black wires as well. If you look closely, the two slots in the 100 V outlet are different lengths. The white neutral wire is connected to the longer slot. If you connect both the red and black wires, then you get 200 V. By changing the combination of the three wires, you can get 100 V or 200 V.
Now, let’s see the difference using this toy here. I’m going to plug it in to this 100 V outlet that is connected to the white and red wires. Let me plug it into the 200 V outlet that’s connected to the red and black wires. Since the voltage is doubled when the outlet is connected to the red and black wires, the toy moves faster.
At home, you differentiate between voltages depending on the appliance.
NARRATOR: Air conditioners and IH cooking devices, which use more electricity, are plugged into 200-V outlets.
DENJIRO: I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!”
