DENJIRO: In this episode, we'll use an ordinary item to observe a very mysterious phenomenon.
We'll use this disc. We'll shine light onto the disc and cast the reflecting light on a screen. Watch this.
GIRL: It’s beautiful! But why does a rainbow appear?
DENJIRO: A colorful ring of rainbow colors has appeared on the screen.
The surface of the disc has very fine grooves used to store sound and image.
When you shine light onto these grooves, they reflect rainbow colors.
This is already mysterious, but there's something even more mysterious.
What will happen when we cover half of the disc?
GIRL: The rainbow-colored ring will be cut in half too, right?
DENJIRO: Let's try and see.
GIRL: That’s so strange! What is going on?
DENJIRO: We now have a big rainbow and small rainbow.
Why does a small rainbow form on the side that has been covered?
To make it easier to understand, we'll cover a larger area of the disc like so.
By narrowing the reflecting light, we can see two rainbows.
NARRATOR: The light reflecting from the disc creates a big rainbow on the side that is not covered and a small rainbow on the covered side.
When we enlarge the area of exposure to half of the disc, a large half-circle rainbow forms on the side that is not covered and a small half-circle on the covered side.
So, the light reflecting from just half of the disc forms a large rainbow on one side and a small rainbow on the other.
DENJIRO: When we shine light onto the whole disc, we get the rainbow ring that we saw earlier.
The ring we saw earlier was actually a combination of two rings.
By using an ordinary item like a disc, we can create a mysterious rainbow ring.
