針と糸を操る ミシン/Sewing Machines that Operate Needles and Threads

DENJIRO: This is a needle that was made by carving out a deer's antler. During the Stone Age, people would carve out needles from animal bones and horns, and use plant fibers as thread. Later in history, the Perry Expedition brought sewing machines into Japan around 1854. This is a sewing machine for children, but let's try it out.
Sewing machines can sew by simply moving the needle up and down. The brown fabric was sewn with a machine, and the blue fabric was sewn by hand with a running stitch. While a running stitch can be done by running the needle and thread through the fabric, a sewing machines just moves the needle up and down, and the needle isn't threaded through the fabric. So how does it sew?
Let's look at the mechanism behind sewing machines. The top thread goes through what's called the take-up lever and into the needle. The bobbin thread is placed under the needle plate. Here's a sewing machine that allows us to observe what's going on inside. As the needle moves up and down, the take-up lever moves with it, while the bobbin case at the bottom spins around. The motor here moves everything at the same time, so all the parts move in sync.
How do sewing machines sew with two threads using one needle? Let me explain using this model here. When the needle moves down, the upper thread goes through the two fabrics. As the needle moves up again, the upper thread remains below the fabrics as a loop. As this happens, the bobbin case spins and causes the bobbin thread to intertwine with the upper thread loop. Then, the take-up lever pulls the upper thread, allowing the two threads to sew the fabrics together. This movement is repeated over and over, and that's how a sewing machine works! The invention of sewing machines made the process of sewing so much easier.
