On-Site Troubleshooting in Surrey Hills: A Detailed Look at an NBN Internet Fault
I'm on the job today in Surrey Hills, working on an issue for a customer with Spintel. They've been experiencing some troubling problems with their connection, so let's dive in and see what's happening.
The Problem
The customer has signed up for a plan with 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. However, they have been consistently receiving no more than 20-25 Mbps. Even during the test, the speed was dropping, so there's clearly a problem.
Testing at the MDF
I connected directly to the customer's pair at the MDF (pair number 28) to check if there were any slow speeds or constant dropout issues. The speeds were slow, and there were indeed dropout issues. Further tests upstairs and downstairs showed a consistent issue, with speeds reaching only 30-35 Mbps.
Technical Observations
Sync Issues: The sync took forever, and the DSL light took a long time to come on.
Flashing Lights: While trying to sync, there was constant flashing red, followed by blue flashing.
Speed Tests: Connected directly to the MDF, speeds were 35 Mbps, and 30 Mbps upstairs.
The Diagnosis
This appears to be an NBN networking issue. A port reset by Spintel could solve the problem, or an NBN contractor might be needed to address the issue with the DPU.
The Impact
The customer is paying for 100 Mbps but only receiving 30 Mbps. Plus, the router is in a bedroom, so the connectivity issues further reduce the speed.
