Ep. 155 A BEAUTIFUL MOSAIC STEPPING STONE, THE ST. JOHN MOSAIC, AND THE 2ND SUNFLOWER GARDEN MOSAIC!

05 Time to turn the wheels on my wheeled nippers so I can have a nice clean cut.
46 I tackle the butterfly stepping stone with two different black stained glasses. Then I take after the zinnia, using pink instead of more orange. My adhesive is GE Silicone. I dip small pieces in the silicone and larger pieces I back butter.
27 On the St. John mosaic, I want to finish the banner. Before I do that, the middle portion needs to be cut from the background and wrapped in plastic wrap so the adjacent sections don't stick to it! I use an exacto blade and it takes several passes to cut through all the way.
21 I separate the eagle from the backing. It makes a satisfying sound when it pulls from the plastic.
08 I begin with the eagle claw that is holding the banner on one side. I cut the segments of the foot from yellow, amber and orange glass and outline the whole thing so it will be visible from a distance.
14 In real time, I show how long it takes to cut one little piece of the "O" in St. John. I adhere the letters, then fill in around each one with white glass.
10 It's finally the point where I can start putting the mosaic on my sunflower. I prepped the substrate last week in this video: Ep. 154 SPECIAL MOSAIC PENDANT, TINY ...
12 I get after the center of the sunflower mosaic with black Apoxie Sculpt. Then I add a big ol' bead. Next, I add all the other beautiful faceted beads in bronze and black. Lastly, I cut the copper streaked vit tiles in half and add them around the edge, angling them as I go. Then I use little yellow tiles around each petal and fill in with irridized orange. My adhesive for this part is thinset. WHY? Because it is sitting there and will be wasted otherwise! It is a very strong bond that is great for exterior projects like this one.
In between the main petals, I add orange and reddish orange glass tiles at the tip.
25 Back to the mosaic butterfly stepping stone! I've brought it to class to show my students. All I have left is the background. I am using a streaky blue for the sky mixed with bits of mirror. I only manage a few pieces before it's time to call it quits.
09 Back home, I burn the midnight oil and crank out the middle of the the 2nd side on my sunflower mosaic instead of going to bed at a reasonable time! These beaded centers are definitely my favorite part of the whole project, so not much of a sacrifice. I use a big ol' brown bead this time in the center and do not use any of the tiles around the edge.
15 Back in the classroom, I get much of the sky done off camera. During my lunch break, I am able to finish the last few pieces. I show how I choose either the colors/patterns on the glass or because it fits nicely. For the last few pieces, it is the gorgeous white swirls that compel me to use the glass. Then I nip and place the last piece. YAY!!!
25 No time to grout this week, but one last look at the butterfly stepping stone!

That's Putting It Together, Ep. 155. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
