Welcome to my studio!
0:32 I'm starting on the eyes and will be going brighter than my photo reference, with a bit of yellow in them. I pre-cut and dry lay the pieces, then lay a bed of thinset and move the eye pieces in place.
The beak/mouth/nostril area is next.
3:20 The sunflower is ready to go! I use GE Silicone because I have some mirror bits and need a neutral cure water proof adhesive and Silicone fits the bill.
I'm using some leftover feather cuts, utilizing the flat bits as they fit best near the relatively flat edge of the center of the flower. Then I build up around the petals with the regular feather cut pieces, occasionally cutting them to fit.
6:07 The Eagle is ready for some feathers! I show some of the different browns I will be using which range from dark brown to really dark brown. Some have a bit more color (green or red.) The amber turns out to be the lighter brown that I need.
8:28 It begins by cutting down some of the glass into manageable strips. Once I have my colors, I have to make some feather cuts and lay them in. The rest of the eagle's head is a light gray glass that will pop against the white of the halo. I find that adding the outline around the head is very satisfying and finishes it off nicely.
10:48 Using Laticrete 254 Platinum thinset, I attach the Apoxie beaded center that I created in Episode 152. The next day, I start adding the rest of the petals with feather cuts again using Silicone. I let that set up overnight and then it is time to grout.
12:53 I mix yellow Colorant brand colorant into white sanded grout and VERY CAREFULLY grout the petals without TAPING!!!! I work on one side at a time, spreading, wiping, buffing, brushing, picking, and cleaning until both sides are grouted and sparkling! I had a few pieces come off in the process (which is the worst!!!!) So I secured them with fresh thinset and grouted gingerly. Once the thinset hardens they won't be going anywhere.
14:52 The double sided sunflower stake is ready for the final step!!! I have it propped up between some heavy bins, with a plate underneath to catch the extra beads. I'm using Laticrete 254 Platinum thinset tinted with yellow colorant to match the grout. I pipe it on the edge and spread it with my mini crowbar tool (available in an 8 pack from Amazon.) Then I tap beads onto it and then press them in by hand. When no more will stick from that method, I place beads one at a time using tweezers. It's a race against the clock to get all the thinset covered. Once I finish half of it, I let it set up for about an hour before tackling the other side.
16:37 The mess was not too bad. The lids on my bins contained most of the beads that spilled and I ended up using about half of a tube of seed beads.
17:18 I give an overview of the sunflower project.
1. I do not like the stake proportions - way too short for a big old sunflower.
2. There are a few bits that stick out in a sharp manner. OUCH!
3. I spent a small fortune on beads. (Something to consider)
4. The rough edges cleaned up so nicely with thinset and beads! Yay!
19:41  The floral mosaic I talked about in a previous video (see links above.)
The other mosaic is called "Summer Chic" and it was made as a demo project for my students showing how to plan a mosaic project where there is layering. Some of it is paper behind various clear glasses. Then beads and fritballs as well as glass are layered on top in various places.

That's Putting it Together Ep. 152! Thanks for watching! See you next time.
