Ep. 154 SPECIAL MOSAIC PENDANT, TINY MOSAIC ROSES, NEW SUBSTRATE, ST. JOHN MOSAIC, MONARCH MOSAIC!

0:06 This week starts with a pendant that was sold on Etsy and the buyer lost! She was requesting another just like it for a special occasion - her daughter's wedding. So I start with pulling the materials. I found three of the smalti colors and the mirror. The teal was as close as I could find in my studio. It is impossible to make it exactly like the other one, but I will get as close as possible. Fortunately, I DID have the same bezel on hand.
1:27 I start nipping slivers and placing them in an empty bezel to get a good start before mixing up Apoxie Sculpt and then moving the pieces in place. Then any gaps can be filled with custom cut slivers. It looks pretty close!
2:36 Then I pull out the little bouquet of apricot roses that I started ages ago. I make each rose and then glue the whole thing in place with E-6000. I always have a couple buds in there. This one was looking a little off balance, so it has 13 roses! At the end, I added beads in between the roses.
4:11 Now I need to spend some time with my good friend, St. John. This week I hope to finish the feathers down to the name banner.
4:46 Before I start on it, I prep some mesh for a new substrate using extra thinset. The stake is difficult to bend, so I will do that off camera. I put plastic underneath and draw out a flower pattern. This one will have petals in between the main petals. I layer both pieces together and cut it out. Then I head over to St. John and start adding more brown feathers. I am making each one a different shade of brown so I can tell them apart. From a distance it will just look feathery.
7:20 When I am finished for the day, I add a layer of thinset to one side of the mesh.
7:34 The next day, I pick up again on the feathers. I make them as before, using different shades of brown.
8:18 I pause and show the first flower that has hardened and how I am going to flip it so the face that I mosaic is flat. Then I will make a thinset sandwich.
8:54 I continue with the feathers, this time finishing down to the banner, including the top of the foot on the left all the way over to the right side!
9:22 I make sure they line up and fit together. They are not perfectly flat, so once the thinset is between them, I will have to squish it together. I end up clamping it together.
10:24 The next day, I show how it came out. Still pretty rough around the edges. Where I clamped it there are two big dents! I might fill those with thinset and smooth them out before I cover it.
10:46 I show a new project I started this week - a butterfly stepping stone! I buy the cement stepping stones at the hardware store. I made a border with vitreous tile for a few reasons:
1. That is how I've done previous stepping stones in my garden, so there is a cohesiveness.
2. It makes the area in the middle that will have a more complex design smaller.
3. It creates a nice clean edge.
I am using GE silicone as my adhesive for this project. I did not seal the stepping stone because I plan on using a waterproof grout so efflorescence is not a problem.
I show how each orange area is cut and shaped, then nipped apart and glued in place.
In my reference photo, the zinnia is orange and the butterfly is orange. That is too much orange for me, so I plan on making the flower a different color.
I am planning on using black grout to fill in around the orange.
That's as far as I got this week!

That's Putting It Together Ep. 154. Thanks for watching! See you next time!
