Hello & thanks for joining me here behind the Great Firewall, I'm glad to have you with me.
Today we'll take a walk around Paifang Street (Chinese: 牌坊街) also called Taiping Road (太平路), a traditional shopping & commercial street of Chaozhou City in Guangdong, China.
Paifang Street is located within the ancient walled city area of Chaozhou. It is a 2 km (1.2 mile) long street lined with dozens of paifangs or memorial arches, a traditional type of Chinese architectural arch or gateway structure, built to commemorate important figures. The street is a hub for Chaozhou specialties, including the well-known Chaozhou snacks, noodles, hotpot & Chaozhou opera. Visitors to the street can also find traditional handicrafts such as wood carvings, jewelry, porcelain & embroidery. After neighboring Shantou was opened to foreigners as a treaty port in 1860, there was also heavy foreign influence on Chaozhou, leading to the interesting mix of Chinese & western architecture that can be seen on the street. 潮州牌坊街位于古城中心，是集非物质文化遗产、传统工艺、特色小吃等为一体的文化古街。 牌坊街特色建筑是中西合璧的骑楼，矗立的22座中式明清石牌坊与两侧南洋风味的骑楼互为映衬，明末清初引入具有南洋建筑风格的骑楼建筑，形成中西合璧的独特侨乡风貌。牌坊街骑楼的店铺主要围绕潮州非物质文化遗产：潮绣、手拉壶、陶瓷、工夫茶等，以及潮式美食：潮州三宝、牛肉火锅、粿条、甘草水果……在潮州，去一趟牌坊街，就可以了解到潮州古城的前世今生。
潮州牌坊街是全国独一无二的文化景观，据黄梅岑先生《潮州牌坊纪略》载：“牌坊，传说可上溯唐宋，初以木建，形似‘乌凹肚门’。
2006年，潮州市启动牌坊街修复工程。工程将修复古牌坊22座（其中太平路20座，东门街2座），整修沿街历史建筑，同时实施沿街古井保护、路面和地下管网改造和公用设施配套。

P.S. This street & area is historically significant because it is the ancestral home & cultural center of the Chaoshanese or Teochew people. Outside of China, Chaoshanese people have settled in Southeast Asia, including in Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, & the Philippines. The community can also be found in diasporas around the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, & France.
