Today we'll take a walk around Shantou's Old Town area (Chinese: 老市区; 老城) also known as the 'Little Park' (小公园), a landmark commercial district & historic quarter of the seaport city of Shantou in Guangdong, China.
In 1860, Shantou (Swatow in the local dialect) was opened to foreigners as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade. This opening brought on the rapid development of Shantou, transforming it into one of the major port cities of Guangdong province & an important port of call in South China.
The old city area is centered on a striking Sun Yat-sen memorial pavilion & the neatly paved square surrounding it. As a major transport hub & commercial center, there are many old & well preserved Western styled buildings here, most of which were built by wealthy returnees, overseas Chinese & foreign merchants prior to the Chinese Revolution. Naturally, as a seaport city, the original streets in the old town area branch out from the central Sun Yat-sen memorial pavilion & end at the piers & docks of the Shantou harborfront & port which have since moved further east. 汕头小公园开埠区，中心位置坐落于广东省汕头市金平区国平路、升平路、安平路交汇处， 以“中山纪念亭”为发端，名为“四永一升平”的一道道骑楼老街呈环型放射状，形成城市街区。 范围西至西堤路、北至西港高架路—中山西路、东至福平路—张园内街—外马路—南海路、南至南海横路—外马路—商平路—至平路—海墘内街—棉安街—镇邦路，总面积72.43万平方米， 较好地保留了20世纪30年代汕头市街区原貌， 见证和承载了汕头“百载商埠”的历史， 成为汕头老城的核心地标和文化标志。
汕头小公园开埠区的结构分为一轴、两核、三区。一轴即潮人精神家园轴，是以小公园中山纪念亭为核心、以安平路为轴线，通过标志性建筑的改造、公共空间的塑造、交通的梳理、文化的凸显等手法打造。两核包括百载商埠文化核心，以中山纪念亭、南生百货大楼等形成；骑楼风情文化核心则是展示传统骑楼建筑的文化核心。三区包括小公园片区、安平西片区和现代居住片区。 清咸丰十年（1860年），汕头作为通商口岸正式开埠。 是近代开埠的34个城市中唯一保留下来的较为完好的开埠区和中国保留较为完整的骑楼建筑群，汕头小公园开埠区不仅记录着城市的历史文脉，也承载着不少海内外潮人的乡土记忆，是“潮人精神文化家园”。
2021年7月12日，汕头小公园开埠区中山纪念亭街区、小公园开埠区西堤街区2处被评为“第三批广东省历史文化街区”。

P.S. Shantou was one of the principal ports from which overseas Chinese went abroad & is the ancestral home of the Chaoshanese (潮汕人) or Teochew people. It has been calculated that some 2.5 million emigrants left from the Chaoshan region through Shantou port during the period from 1880 to 1909, mainly moving to places in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, & the Philippines.
