Hi, my name is Rebel and my ex-boyfriend got me sent to jail when I was 16 because I found out his dirty secrets.
It all started during the summer. My parents didn’t have much free time, so I was constantly being dumped at summer camps and hobby centers. I met David when my parents signed me up for weekend gliding lessons. David was my instructor. He was 25 at the time, good looking, lean-built and… Well, attention from an older man made me feel "super grown-up." I think that being nestled up and in the constant presence of danger led us to develop intimacy very fast.
Soon we were skipping the gliding lessons. David took me for rides out of town where we spent time together. I felt so carefree. David warned me that I could never tell my parents about us or otherwise we’d both be in trouble. But I knew that already and I wasn’t stupid.
After a few weeks, we first kissed. I had never had a boyfriend before, so I asked him, could we be a couple? He agreed, but said “No one can know about us and we’ll be like Romeo and Juliet.” It sounded so romantic! We even developed public roles. He would be Henry—my drama teacher, and for his acquaintances, he introduced me as his niece Julie. I liked playing those games. It was fun and exciting.
I didn’t know then how fast it would escalate...
