Hey, everybody. I’m Blaire and when I was 12 years old, I discovered that I’m basically a vampire.
As a kid, I really liked playing outside. My parents didn’t have a lot of money, so we couldn’t travel much, but my dream was always to see the ocean. Even sometimes, when I’d have trouble sleeping, I’d put on ocean sounds—the waves crashing into the shore would make me feel better. My mom told me stories about my great-grandfather who was a sea captain. I still dream of him sailing through the seas and singing sailor songs. But soon I’d figure out that my dream was impossible, ‘cause I’m not like other people.
This all came to light when I was 12 years old. My friends and I had this competition every year, like a treasure hunt, and whoever lost had to buy the others ice cream. But this time, the stakes were even higher. A new family had moved into our neighborhood and they had a boy named Blaze. He was a year older than us and had this big-city atmosphere about him. We all had set our eyes on him, so we decided that whoever won this year would have dibs on him. So, the competition started, we were all scattered around the streets, and I was already close to winning. I was climbing up a tree to pick up the last clue when I felt my skin burning up. It felt like pure lava being poured on me. I fell from the tree and started screaming like crazy. I couldn’t understand where the pain was coming from. After about 5 minutes, my mom came to my rescue. She took me in her arms and ran back home. She tried to put me in cold water to calm me down, but it was SO painful. It took me a couple of days to get better…
My parents were puzzled. I couldn’t think of anything that might have caused the reaction. Our family doctor came, but he didn’t think there was anything serious. And, yet… It kept happening. One day after another, when I was having fun playing outside, I’d get rashes, my skin would feel itchy, and I’d feel horrible pain. After a while, my body looked wrinkled and scarred like an old lady’s. And I didn’t want to play with other kids anymore. I felt ashamed. Even during the evenings, my mom would suggest going for a walk and I’d lash out, saying that I was a freak and I didn’t want to scare people. I didn’t even know whether it was contagious or not. My mom was going crazy, too. I’d hear her making calls day after day, searching for another doctor for a solution. Finally, she found some lady doctor who said that she might have an idea of what was happening to me. My mom took me to her. She ran some tests and brought me the horrifying news that would change my life forever...
