The loquat is native to central eastern China. It was introduced to Japan more than 1,000 years ago, where it was developed horticulturally and is still highly valued. Some superior Japanese varieties reached Europe, the Mediterranean, and a few other regions.

Consuming loquat fruits in moderate amounts does not cause any health issues. However, excessive intake of raw or ripe loquats can trigger digestive issues in the stomach, intestines, kidney problems and in some cases, hampers and weakens muscles – a condition known as toxic myopathy.

In India mainly it is known as Lukat or Lugath. It is an evergreen and subtropical fruit tree. It attains the height of 5-6m and is spreading in nature. The fruit is native to central-eastern China and is mainly grown in Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan countries.

The seeds are not edible, but the skin is. However, it's also easily peeled away if you prefer. Aside from snacking on them fresh, there are tons of ways that loquats can be used in different applications. They're delicious blended into juices, smoothies, and vinaigrettes, and are sometimes even fermented into wine.

In order of abundance, the major soluble sugars in loquat fruit (cv. Jiefangzhong) are fructose, glucose and sucrose (Fig. 4). At harvest, the levels of those sugars were 29.5, 9.1, and 3.57 mg/g FW, respectively.

Fire Blight (bacterium – Erwinia amylovora): Loquat is a member of the family Roseaceae and is related to apple, pear, and quince. Fire blight, as described under pear, is the most serious disease of loquat.
Delicious, loquats are very low in calories; provide just 47 calories per 100 g. Nonetheless, they are rich in insoluble dietary fiber, pectin. Pectin retains moisture in the colon, and thus functions as bulk laxative.
Loquats are particularly high in carotenoid antioxidants, which boost the immune system. A strong immune system is important for fighting off sickness. Early research shows that loquat fruit and leaves may help prevent cancer. Antioxidants in loquat fruit help suppress cancerous tumor growth.
Being high on dietary fibres and low in calories, loquat fruits help in weight loss and controlling appetite. Moreover, copious amounts of vitamin A improves eye health, while vitamin C builds immunity and vitamin B6 enhances brain functions.
