Understanding cultural perspectives requires you to use empathy and understanding of the various ways in which people live, the things they believe in, and their values. The first step of understanding cultural perspectives is identifying stereotypes. Stereotypes are assumptions that do not accurately represent all aspects of a culture and its people. Look for an insider’s rather than an outsider’s perspective. Where to Go and What to Look For. You don’t have to do a vast amount of research or become a cultural expert in order to discuss culture effectively. A quick web search is sufficient. Look for information relating to Lifestyles and habits, Their history and experience, Customs and Practices, Family and gender roles, Issues and Challenges.
Example: NZ Maori: Indigenous people of New Zealand, of Polynesian origin. Many customs assimilated into broader NZ culture. History of tension and land ownership following the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi. Some traditional practices and language are still ongoing in roughly ¼ of homes. Social Issues such as life expectancy, income status and crime rate. Understanding culture helps understanding texts Influenced by different perspectives. Try to view from an insider’s perspective.
