Comparative Essays for Year 10 and 11
• Year 10 and 11 teachers tend to get you to write a really simple version of a comparative essay.
• Keep in mind that a real comparative essay is much harder, and you will have to learn to write one in Year 12.
• You will need to check the reason for your comparison and make a similarities and differences table (see Introduction to Comparative Studies video) before you begin writing the essay.

Structure of a Comparative Essay

Introduction
.1. Address the question using question keywords and define your comparison type and the reasons for it.
.2. Name the texts, with the year each was published in brackets after each name.
.3. Indicate the genre, text type and composer of each text.
.4. Give a brief summary of each text’s cultural context – no more than a sentence for each text.
.5. Explain why these two texts go so well together – this is not just identifying the comparison type again, more about justifying the texts set for study.
.6. Signpost, or identify the main ideas you are going to discuss. Introduce them in the order they will appear as the topic sentences of each paragraph in your essay.

One Body Paragraph
.1. Topic sentence: introduce the theme or convention which connects the two texts.
.2. Explain how Text One treats the idea and link this to its contextual values.
.3. Name a technique and quote from Text One to support this.
.4. Explain how Text Two treats the idea and link this to its contextual values.
.5. Name a technique and quote from Text Two to support this.
.6. Explain the message of each text, comment on the texts’ similarities or differences and link it to your answer to the question.

Conclusion
.1. Use some words such as ‘finally’ or ‘ultimately’ to create a tone of finality. Don’t use “In conclusion”.
.2. Refer back to the question keywords, and make sure you’ve answered the question.
.3. Explain the ultimate message of each text, and its significance and continued effect or influence on today’s audience.
.4. Confirm that the texts should be studied together for their synergistic value.
.5. Give a mature comment on the value of the texts and their message for society. Leave your marker with something deep to think about.
