Many of the texts you will encounter that are composed by Indigenous Australian authors will contain themes related to their beliefs, their communities and their history. Many stories have a connection with Stolen Generations. Aboriginal stories and text each have unique themes and do not ubiquitously represent the entire population. Stories by Aboriginal authors relate an individual’s personal and cultural perspectives, as all other texts do.

Focus on discussing how a text represents an author’s perspective rather than Aboriginal people as a whole. As the ancestry of Indigenous Australians is traditionally divided by tribes or ‘nations’, beliefs too are separate. Modern values of Indigenous Australians integrated into Australian culture, including issues such as health and welfare. Aboriginal movements in the last 50 years also have pushed for civil rights, land rights and the apology for the Stolen Generations.

The Stolen Generations is a sensitive topic and many of the stories you encounter will contain confronting themes. They are a means by which you can discuss voice and perspective, that is, how their experiences have affected their outlook of life. These stories generally represent themes such as: belonging, loss, community, identity, family. They may also embody ideas of changes and journeys.

Aboriginal English is a recognised dialect. It is still used throughout many Indigenous communities. The language represents the collective voices, beliefs and societies of Aboriginal people. The language follows many of the features of regular English, and usage varies between communities. Kriol is a separate language which incorporates English and Aboriginal words.

Responding to Aboriginal Themes:
As with any text you should ask and answer the following questions: What is the main idea of the text? How does it represent values and beliefs? How are its characters portrayed? How does it utilise language? How does it represent its specific community? Use ‘Aboriginal person’ or ‘Indigenous person’. Be sensitive: many of the issues are confronting and deeply personal. Avoid stereotypes: The vast majority of Aboriginal people don’t identify with how they are portrayed across the world. Remember that communities are distinct, not all values are the same. Your focus is on Aboriginal perspectives. How they reflect language and people.
Develop appreciation of Indigenous Australian culture.
