Understanding Text, Context and Medium
Text and Context are the relationships between a text and the world around it. In other words, it is about how a text fits into the culture and has ideas relating to the time of writing and contemporary reading. The medium also affects how a story is constructed and interpreted.

Why Context?
Studying context involves analysing the relationship a text has with the world. No text can be fully understood when isolated from the world around it. Nor can a text be interpreted consistently and universally. Text and context in the BOS require you to interpret and analyse what informs a ‘reading’ and the different ways an interpretation can be made.

Context and Text
Finding the context of a text involves researching the period when the text was composed. Understanding the period's culture makes it easier to critique and analyse the work relative to the period when it was written. Through this, it is possible to identify, discuss or evaluate how a text changes meaning over time.

Contemporary Context
Looking at a contemporary context requires you to argue and discuss the value of a text to modern society. You are deciphering how a text retains value over time by comparing and contrasting themes and ideas to current social and cultural paradigms. Look for themes that are universal or persistent.

Between Texts
Studying text and context also requires drawing links between other works and their context. In other words, how does a story from one time and place different from a similar story written at a different period, in a different place, by a different person?

Response to Context-Related Questions
When responding to a context-related question – you are attempting to state how the meaning of a text is shaped by the combination of the text and context.
Such as:
• How a text is relevant to modern society
• How a text is shaped by the time it was composed
• How ideas reflect the human experience.
• The relationship between texts of different eras
• The relationship of texts between different authors
• The relationship of texts between different mediums.

Medium
Medium relates to studying the link between text forms (e.g. film and prose). Depending on the text you are studying, this may require distinguishing between various forms of the same text. Most of your analysis will focus on construction and how a text designed for one form is appropriated into another.
