තම රට වෙනුවෙන් සියළු දේ කැප කළ ජෙෂ්ඨ පුරවැසියන්ගේ ජීවිතයේ සැදෑ සමය සුවදායක පරිසරයක නිදහස්ව සිතැගි පරිදි ගෙදරින් බැහැර ගෙදරක ගත කිරීම සදහා රතනපියස නම් වූ සොදුරු නිවහන කුරුණෑගල පිහිටුවා ඇත.
"ගෙදරින් පිට ගෙයක් " කියන සංකල්පය අනුව මෙවනි ආයතනයක් ආරම්භ කිරීමේ යෝජනාව රජයට ඉදිරිපත් කලේ ඒ නිසයි. මෙයට ඇතුලත් වෙන වැඩිහිටියෙකුට හෝ ඔවුන්ගේ දරුවෙකුට වැඩිහිටි නිවාසයකට ඇතුලු වුණාය කියා හැගීමක් ඇති වෙන්නේ නැහැ.මෙහි ඇති ප්‍රධාන වෙනස වන්නේ එයයි. මෙහි කිසිදු ආකාරයක ආයතනික ස්වරූපයක් ඇත්තේ නැහැ. මෙහි අතුලු වෙන වැඩිහිටියෙකුට දැනෙන්නේ තම නිවසේම සිටින බවයි. උදාහරණයක් ලෙස කීවොත් මේ නිවාසය ගැන දැන්වීම් පුවරුවක්වත් දමා නැහැ. මෙහි දිනපතා වැඩපිළිවෙළක් තිබුණත් වේලාවන් ඇතුලත් කාළ කාලසටහනක් නැහැ. කෙනෙක් පුරුදු වෙලා ඉන්නේ දවල් වෙනකල් නිදා ගන්නට නම් මෙම නිවසේදී එයාව උදේ හයට ඇහැරවන්නේ නැහැ. තනියම එළියට යන්ට පුළුවන් කෙනෙකුට භාරකරුගේ එකඟතාවය තියෙනවානම් අත්සන් කර දවල් කාලයේ ඕනෑම වෙලාවක එළියට ගිය හැකියි.
ඒ වගේ පුද්ගලිකත්වයට බෙහෙවින් නිදහස දුන්න ස්ථානයක් ලෙසයි මේක පවත්වන්නෙ. මෙහි කෑම වේල පවා තීරණය කරන්නේ නේවාසිකයින් විසින් මාස තුනකට වරක් තියෙන රැස්වීමේදී ඔවුන් විසින්මයි.
ඒවගේම මෙය පවත්වාගෙන යාමට වසර 25 කට වඩා කීර්තිමත් ඉතිහාසයක් ඇති කුරුණෑගල ප්‍රබුද්ධ සංවිධානයක් වන කුරුණෑගල එක්සත් මිතුරු සමාජයට රජය අවස්ථාව ලබා දීලා තිබෙන අතර, ඒ අය ඉතා ඉහළ ප්‍රසාදයක් ලැබෙන පරිදි මෙය පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලැබේ. මෙම සමාජ ප්‍රශ්නයට ප්‍රශස්ත විසදුමක් ලබා දීම විශාල ජයග්‍රහණයක්.
Rathana Piyasa Senior Citizens Resort: Rathanapiyasa is " HOME AWAY HOME "a reputed Senior Citizen Care Centre in Kurunegala ( Sri Lanka) which preserves the dignity and privacy of residents in the peaceful and homely surroundings.
The generation gap caused additional problems. Where the elderly parents were not able to pursue their activities in their own homes. They were unable to watch even a television program that they enjoyed or observe a religious activity.
Social Services and Volunteer groups together with the Government did provide some facilities in the care of the elderly. These did not satisfy all the needs of the community. There were those for the people who could afford a sum beyond the means of the average middle-income earning group of people, and there were limited places in free elderly homes, with meager care for low-income earners.
The middle-income earners had no alternatives but to continue in their homes or live with the children. The Children considered it rather an activity that would bring disrepute if the parents are placed in an Elders Home and the parents, in turn, did not want their children to be looked down on by society. The elderly had to endure the way of life that was forced upon them due to the lack of available facilities. They learned to live and die assuming it to be their destined fate.
Therefore if we do have a place that could be considered as a second home rather than an institution, may be the way to the future, where living in such a home will not create a stigma to the children or the parent residents. It would be a home away from home There should be no advertising signs, no timetables to adhere to like waking up at a particular time, the resident parent must be able to travel out of the home, during the day when they needed after letting the caretaker know. The meals could also be discussed and organized by fellow resident parents during their quarterly meetings.
This new concept was considered by the North Western Provincial Council and approved to set up a place in Kurunegala and that project should be a combined effort of the Government and the Local Society. (This being a non-profit organization the name Private Sector is not suitable.)
This Project Proposal was accepted by the Finance Commission. The main problem that followed was the lack of a suitable site with sufficient land. All inquiries from the various North Western Provincial Divisional Secretaries were of no avail. A Great Philanthropist from Pollattapitiya Kurunegala, Mrs. Khema Jayasundara came up with the idea of donating an acre of coconut land out of the estate she received from her parents. The project was commenced in 2010 with the support given by the Hon. Provincial Minister MR. Ramanayake and Provincial Director of Social Services Mrs. V. Malani.
Rathanapiyasa is now well established and run according to expected principles as mentioned above. A well-organized and excellent group of friends “The Kurunegala United Friendship Community” has been granted the responsibility of running the parent's retreat, by the Sri Lanka Government.
