Around 11:18 PM on December 18, 2022, officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a call of a firearm being discharged in the vicinity of Clayton Street and N Jackson Street. Officer Robert Bailey made contact with the caller and he advised the officer that he observed 2 females arguing when he stepped outside to take a phone call. During the argument, one of the females discharged a handgun into the air on N Jackson Street and walked towards College Avenue with another male. He described the female as wearing a white shirt with a plaid skirt and a jacket draped over her left arm.

Officer Bailey walked down the left side of N Jackson Street and located one shell casing outside of Toppers. As he was speaking with the witness, one of the workers advised the officer that the female they were searching for was inside the dressing room at Toppers. The worker led Officer Bailey and another officer towards the dressing room and they were able to make contact with the suspect, who was later identified as 21-year-old Valerie.

Valerie told the officers that the female she was arguing with was the one who discharged the firearm. The officers were advised that Valerie was still in possession of the firearm. They located a GLOCK 9mm in a holster under her skirt and retrieved it as evidence. Valerie was placed in handcuffs and escorted to the patrol car. As the officers were conducting a search incident to arrest, the caller came and confirmed that Valerie was the one who had discharged a firearm. After their search was complete, Valerie was transported to the Athens-Clarke County Jail and charged under the following statutes: OCGA 16-11-39 (Disorderly Conduct), OCGA 16-13-30(j)(1), OCGA 16-11-134, and OCGA 16-13-60(b) (Reckless Conduct)
