A "bag gun" is what
A "bag gun" is what its name suggests: a personal-defense firearm larger than a pistol that is carried discreetly in a backpack or other case that is not recognizable as a gun case. It is simply a concealed carry firearm that provides greater defensive capability than a pistol, which may be needed in situations such as widespread violent civil unrest. Think of it as a supplement to your daily defense handgun, rather a replacement for it. A bag gun needs to be short and compact. It can be a PDW (personal defense weapon), a pistol version of a larger firearm like an AR-15; an SBR (short-barreled rifle), which must be registered with the ATF and may not be legal in your state / municipality; or a small PCC, a pistol caliber carbine. Jeff explains the specific pros and cons of each of these firearms. Some of the benefits of a bag gun over a handgun are better accuracy, longer effective range, and higher ammunition capacity.
Before you go out and get a bag gun, take some time to really define its "mission" - what your actual need for it is. It's a firearm that you would resort to in a very narrow set of circumstances. You'll need to be able to DETECT a genuine threat, then try to DEFUSE the situation, and if that doesn't work DEFEND yourself with the bag gun only as a last resort. The realistic odds of ever needing a bag gun are quite low. But in a bad situation where your life is threatened, what are the stakes? A bag gun can shift the balance more in favor of your survival.
