"Self-defense emergencies often happen at dusk or at night, when you can't see a threat clearly. The solution is to have a light mounted on your gun. Often called a ""weapon light"" - a term borrowed from military - a gun light must be used cautiously. Wherever you shine the light, your gun's muzzle is also pointing there. So it's important to carry a hand-held flashlight for initial search and identification of a threat. The flashlight lets you illuminate an area indirectly by bouncing light off a wall or ceiling.

The gun light only comes into play when you've moved from search / identification mode to ""shoot"" mode against an attacker. If you do use the gun light when you're in ""search"" mode, hold the pistol in a READY position. This enables you to use a two-handed grip on the gun if you need to shoot. But most self-defense shootings happen at such a close range that the single-hand (strong hand) hold is more than adequate.

Gun lights come in various sizes. The classic SureFire X300 Ultra is pretty large and bulky, but it pumps out a lot of light. SureFire offers the smaller XC1 for subcompact pistols and the SureFire XSc is for micro-compact concealed-carry pistols. Gun lights come with several types of switches: (1) a simple up/down toggle switch, (2) a paddle switch, or (3) a pushbutton switch. Most lights have both MOMENTARY-ON and CONSTANT-ON modes. Momentary-on should be your ""go-to"" mode. Rarely do you need to keep the light on for a long time. When it is on, an attacker can follow the light beam back to you! "
