In this video we take a look at a salvage yard 2009 Chevy Cobalt BCM Delphi 25928052 and how to open it up, locate the EEPROM, and go over the deep technical information around the chips memory address locations for the BCM serial number, the VIN, and the obfuscated mileage values.  There are many different GM part numbers on the Delphi BCMs from 2005 thru 2010, but the ones with this same cosmetic appearance all use an ST 95080 type EEPROM in a SOP8 / SOIC8 package style (older chips may be Delphi house marked 1001378) to store this information. This same BCM in the Chevrolet Cobalt may also be found on the Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac G5, Pontiac Solstice, and Saturn Sky models. While this video is specific to the particular BCM part number shown, the technical concepts are common to all Delphi BCMs of this same general design and appearance for the Cobalt, HHR, G5, Solstice, and Sky across model years 2005 thru 2010 or so.

The information I've shared here is crucial to re-using salvage yard sourced BCMs, as you cannot change the VIN or odometer contents of an USED BCM with any scan tool (including the GM Tech2 or MDI).  GM simply did not intend to allow the use of used BCMs in performing repair work at its dealerships, but rather only new or remanufactured BCMs that they sell thru their parts departments.   A remanufactured BCM is in fact just an used one that has simply had the EEPROM programmed with a virgin image from a brand new BCM EEPROMs contents of the same part number so that the Tech2 scan tool thinks it is a new one.  A BCM EEPROM contains not only the VIN, but also the mileage of the vehicle in these years (obfuscated but I'll share in the video how to decode this byte string or you'll need to purchase a mileage calculator software tool like Tachosoft).  It also contains the vehicle configuration data.

I recommend you either just copy your original BCM EEPROM image over to the salvage yard replacement (preferred), or alternatively, physically swap the EEPROM chip itself from your original BCM circuit board to the salvage yard replacement BCM.  You're going to have to remove the chip from the board either way, these model BCMs cannot be read in-circuit.  I don't recommend you attempt to edit the memory values directly, unless of course your original BCM circuit board was damaged rendering the two recommended approaches unavailable to you.
