In this video we take a look at a first generation Chevy Cruze BCM 13585674 (replaces 13586278) and open it up, locate the EEPROM, and go over the deep technical information around the chips memory address locations for the security key pin code, the VIN, and the obfuscated mileage values.  There are many different GM part numbers on the first generation Cruze installed Delphi BCMs from 2011 thru 2016 (for 2016 only for the Cruze Limited model), but the first generation Cruze models all use a 24C16 type EEPROM in a SOP8 / SOIC8 package style to store this information. This same BCM may also be found on the Chevy Volt as well. While this video is specific to the particular BCM shown, the technical concepts are common to all Delphi BCMs for Cruze and Volt for the years covered.

This information is crucial to re-using salvage yard sourced BCMs, as you cannot change the VIN or odometer contents of an USED BCM with a scan tool (including the GM MDI or MDI2).  GM simply did not intend to allow the use of used BCMs in performing repair work at its dealerships, but rather only new or remanufactured BCMs that they sell thru their parts departments.   The remanufactured BCM is in fact just an used one that has simply had the EEPROM programmed with a virgin image from a brand new BCM EEPROMs contents of the same part number.  A BCM contains not only the VIN, but also the mileage of the vehicle in these years (obfuscated so to decode this byte string you'll need to purchase a mileage calculator software tool like Tachosoft.) as well as theft deterrence data.

I recommend you either just copy your original BCM EEPROM image over to the salvage yard replacement (preferred), or alternatively, physically swap the EEPROM chip itself from your original BCM circuit board to the salvage yard replacement BCM.   I don't recommend you attempt to edit the memory values directly, unless of course your original BCM circuit board was damaged rendering the two recommended approaches unavailable to you.
