Infield Warm Up Progression Drill: This drill helps build build the foundation to develop your infielders skills. This drill is very important for younger players, who don’t have proper mechanics and bad habits that need to be corrected.
*
Setup of Drill: Have a coach 15ft - 20ft from where the 3rd baseman should be playing, sitting on a bucket with a bucket of balls. Place your 1st baseman at first base with an empty bucket. Have your players line up behind the 3rd baseman position.
*
Step 1: Coach will throw a slow roller to the first player in line. Focus on the fundamentals of attacking and charing the ball, to make an accurate throws to first baseman. Have all the players go through a couple times, then have the coach do a slow roller to their backhand. Because they are slow rollers, players should learn how to make a little V cut to attack the ball to build momentum taking their body to first base to field, then make a strong accurate throw to first base. After all the players are comfortable fielding the ball on their backhand. The coach should now do a slow roller to the players left, doing the same where they need to attack the ball to use their momentum to make a strong throw to first baseman.
*
Step 2: After the players are comfortable making that play from the 3rd base position, making that long throw, have all players move to the Short Stop position and the coach right in front of them, doing the same progression doing a slow roller: playing the ball in front of them, to their backhand and then forehand.
*
Step 3: After the players are comfortable making that play from the Short Stop position, have all players move to the 2nd Base position and the coach right in front of them, doing the same progression doing a slow roller: playing the ball in front of them, to their backhand, planting their foot to turn and make a strong throw and then to forehand to their left, fielding the ball and then making a soft toss or underhand toss depending on how close they are to the first baseman.
*
Step 4: After the players are comfortable making that play from the 2nd base position. Have all the players go back to 3rd base and now have the coach hit ground balls to them exactly in the same progression, (in front, backhand, forehand) going one player at a time, from 3rd, to Short Stop to 2nd base, now fielding those hard hit ground balls and applying what they learned from the slow rollers. If you have time, you can now place your players in their actual infield positions and do a full infield, hitting the ball to each position, calling out situation plays. This is why it’s called the Infield Warm Up Progression drill. Helps build that strong foundation.

Rules of this Drill: This drill really helps with the repetition of fielding a slow rolling ball, helping players develop proper mechanics. If for some reason, players are not fielding, charging or attacking the ball properly, or even making a bad throws to the first baseman, have that player move back in line to the person who was just behind them, in order to have them do the drill right right away. Have a coach talk that player first and explain what they did wrong or what they need to do, in order to execute the drill properly and then throw them back in the line, to go right away Doing this will help you as coach get instant feedback and hopefully show you you players are  making the proper adjustments. If they keep doing it wrong, keep putting them back in the line to go right away, instead of the back of the line, where they need to wait to see if they are able to execute the drill properly. Doing this will help them build confidence as well.

This is a great drill to really help your players build the foundation they need to be a good infielder, teaching proper mechanics and remove any bad habits. 🥎🥎🥎#softball #SoftballDrills #EasySoftballDrills #Softball #SoftballPracticeDrills #FunSoftballDrills #infielddrills #infieldmechanics
