How to play a scrimmage game at practice with not enough players. Drill is called “2 Base”. This is the best way to end your practice. How do you play a scrimmage game when you don’t have enough players to field 2 teams? Here’s how:
*
Setup of Drill: Divide players into teams of 2, if you have an odd amount of players then make 1 team consist of 3 players. You can play with a minimum of 9 players. If you have less then 9, you can ask if a parent or coach step in to play in the outfield. One coach will be the designated pitcher, just throwing soft toss to the batters and 2nd coach as a designated catcher.
*
Step 1: Have 1 team go up to bat. 1 Player goes up to bat and 2nd teammate will start on 2nd base. The remaining players will occupy a defensive position. If you have more then 9 players, then other teams/player can wait on deck for their turn to go up to bat.
*
Step 2: All teams start with the same scenario. 1 strike and 1 out. This helps speed up the game and forces your players to adjust their at bats and approch to the count, outs and runner in scoring position. Coach pitches. Batter has to put the ball in play to try and score that runner from 2nd base. If the batter hits a single and the runner doesn’t score. Nothing happens. That runner from 2nd now goes up to bat and that batter now starts on 2nd base as a baserunner. Coach pitches again and same thing, batter has to put ball in play. You can walk but that doesn’t help your team. If the ball is hit and gets the batter or runner out. Then the play stops and you have 2 outs, or if you get a double play and that ends the inning, because there is 3 outs now. If batter hits the ball in play where the runner on 2nd base is able to score at home, then that team gets 1 run and then switches position again. Batter becomes baserunner on 2nd and baserunner becomes the batter and you keep going until that team gets 3 outs. The next team then goes up to bat with the same scenario. One player goes up to bat with 1 strike, 1 out and a runner starts on 2nd base. You keep going through all the teams. Depending on how much time you have, you can have several innings. 1 inning would be when all teams get an at bat.
*
Rules of Drill/Game: Everyone always starts with 1 Strike and 1 Out. If you get an Out. Next batter is still starts their at bat with 1 Strike in their count but now it’s 2 outs. Because we don’t want any injuries and a coach is at home. There is no sliding at home. Just like in slow pitch, you can have a line to determine if the runner is out at home. The baserunner just needs to run past the line before the ball makes it home and the coach has to be stepping on home plate. Team with most runs, wins the game.

Have a lot of fun with this drill!!! This is the best way to end a great practice where your players worked hard and you want to reward them, where they can put into action what they have been working on, in a game like situation. 🥎🥎🥎#softball #SoftballDrills #EasySoftballDrills #Softball #SoftballPracticeDrills #FunSoftballDrills #SoftballGame #SoftballScrimmageGame #competitivesoftballdrills #gamelikesituation
