One of the most shocking
One of the most shocking moments in English History saw the King, Charles I being executed in London in front of a huge crowd following the end of the English Civil War. Charles I's execution was performed by axe, and when the bloody job was completed there were mixed feelings throughout his Kingdom. But the leading figure behind it was Oliver Cromwell, the man who then became the 'Lord Protector,' of Britain and the Commonwealth, and the man who had defeated him during the Civil War. Cromwell pushed for the King's execution, but after his death he rejected the Crown himself but served as the Head of State. Cromwell's reputation is a mixed one, some regard him as a man who over-threw tyranny, and other's believe he was a cold blooded murderer and war criminal. After Charles' death, Cromwell remained in power for a number of years before he passed away. He was then buried inside of Westminster Abbey, but when the Monarchy was restored, and Charles II came onto the throne, Cromwell's remains were dug up.
Charles II ordered the regicides, a series of trials and executions for those men who had caused his father's death and who had signed the death warrant of his father. Cromwell who had passed away was not exempt from punishment, as the new King ordered his dead body and corpse to be dug up from Westminster Abbey. It was then paraded throughout the streets of London and it was taken to Tyburn, the infamous site of execution. Cromwell's remains along with those of two other high ranking regicides were hanged in chains, before they were then beheaded by an axeman. It was said Cromwell's posthumous execution took 8 swings of the axe, and then his head was place on a spike above Westminster Hall. His head went on a remarkable journey after his death, falling into a number of different hands. But his body's location still today remains a mystery.
