During the Tudor period and
During the Tudor period and the reign of infamous monarch King Henry VIII, the Tower of London became a site of execution where a number of Queens of England were beheaded and executed on Tower Green inside the walls of the Tower. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were Henry VIII's Second and Fifth wife, and the pair were killed on Tower Green. Anne was executed by a French Swordsman, and Catherine Howard was executed by the commoner's axe. But what was it like to witness a Tudor execution at the Tower? Executions usually took place on Tower Green on a scaffold that had been made there, and the scaffold was usually covered in hay to absorb the blood. Also those who were executed inside the Tower were of royal blood, or of very high status because to be granted a private execution was considered a great privilege. Only the monarch could allow such an action to occur, with the majority of prisoners including Thomas Cromwell and Sir Thomas More being imprisoned inside the Tower, but they were then executed on Tower Hill.
There would have been hundreds of witnesses to see the bloody spectacle. So the executions were not entirely private. Most were performed by axe, with Anne Boleyn's being performed by sword. Many of the everyday people were allowed to witness the executions too, as the Crown wished for the public to see that justice was being carried out. There were only a small number of people granted the privilege of being executed inside the Tower of London, including Lady Jane Grey (The 9 Day Queen), Robert Devereux, Jane Boleyn and Margaret Pole. Many of the executions were botched taking more than one swing to complete the job, but some were efficient.
