One of the most famous
One of the most famous executions throughout history saw a young French peasant girl being led to the stake where she was burned in front of a huge crowd. During the 100 Years War, Joan of Arc was seen as a symbol of French heroism and belief that they could defeat the English and turn the tide of the long drawn out conflict. Joan had a religious vision, and during this saints appeared to her and told her to lead French against the English and to lift the Siege of Orleans. It was during this siege where Joan gained a notorious reputation for being a feared and skilled fighter, and she was greatly feared by the English. She managed to get the French King back on the throne, but after a number of victories she was captured and handed over to her enemies.
The English placed her on trial and accused her of a huge number of charges including heresy and witchcraft. At her trial she was found guilty, and then in front of a huge crowd she was burned at the stake. Many of those who witnessed the execution of Joan of Arc claimed that they had burned a saint that day, and that God would punish them for this. She is remembered today as 'The Maid of Orleans,' and also as a saint in France, but she died a horrifically brutal death and was only roughly 19 when this happened.
