We've already made a top 5 about the worst game endings but now it's time to look at the very best game endings of all time. Get ready for five great examples of going out on a high note. O and spoiler alert in case you haven't played the games on this list.
5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - Konami
The final battle between Snake and his beloved mentor in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater tears us to pieces every time. The woman he was sent to kill was not a traitor, but only disguised as one in order to clear the U.S. of involvement in a nuclear attack. And she completes her mission by sacrificing herself and her reputation for her country. It’s an ending that stays with you forever.
4. Journey - thatgamecompany
The ending to Journey fit the theme and point of the game perfectly. After you freeze to death in the snow, you are transported to a heavenly place. Then you walk towards a bright shining light and are reborn to go on another journey. What a beautiful metaphor for life
3. The Walking Dead - Telltale
The final scene in the Walking Dead by Telltale is simply heartbreaking. Lee has been bitten and there’s no way to save him. He has been protecting Clementine the entire game but now she has to choose whether to shoot him or let him become a zombie. It’s a beautiful ending either way and one that brings a tear to our eye every time.
2. Red Dead Redemption - Rockstar
It came as a complete shock when John Marston was brutally murdered after spending over twenty hours with him. Three years later you assume the role of Jack, who seeks to avenge his father’s death. You track down Edgar Ross and the duel that follows results in one of the most satisfying game endings of all time.
1. The Last of Us - Naughty Dog
The Last of Us ending doesn't wrap things up neatly and that's exactly why we love it. We'll never be sure if Ellie believes Joel and where the two will end up. Is Joel a hero for saving the life of a young girl from the ruthless Fireflies who would have sacrificed her to make a cure for the virus? Or is he a villain that doomed humanity by protecting a girl that he sees as a replacement for his own dead daughter. Either way he wiped out humankind's last chance of survival and even if we don't agree, we completely understand why he did it.
