Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the west of the Balkan Peninsula. Its northern part is criss-crossed by Dinaric mountain ranges and untamed rivers. The fertile valleys are dotted with villages, most of whose inhabitants still live from agriculture. A mild continental climate also allows the cultivation of the heat-loving okra. The Ottomans brought this shrubby vegetable with them to Bosnia. Since then, the vitamin-rich pods have been an integral part of Bosnian cuisine, but are mostly still imported from Turkey.

Okra, also known as vegetable marshmallow, belongs to the mallow family, is one of the oldest vegetable plants and was already cultivated in Ethiopia over 4000 years ago. In Bosnia, okras are used a lot, fresh and dried. In Begova čorba, a stew of vegetables and meat, okra is the main ingredient. Biba Malčić also uses okras for a vegetable mixture from which she makes vegan cutlets.
In addition, the trained chemist prepares a special mass from it: a face mask that is supposed to tighten the skin.
