Core strength and conditioning exercises
Core strength and conditioning exercises on a bar, are a critical part of climbing training, whether you're a route or boulder specialist. They enable us to transition some of our basic core strength (often gained on the floor) into a more sport-specific plane of movement and also utilise a greater portion of the chain of muscle activation in climbing movements.
For those of you who have tried and/or completed the "Bar Core" session within our training app Crimpd, you'll be aware that the 2 exercises in this workout are fairly advanced if you're a less experienced core trainer. For that reason, we've had Ollie spend some time filming you a sequence of introduction exercises that can be used to build-up to the full Bar Core workout.
It's worth noting here, that not all exercises have to completed in a session if you're not yet ready. Everyone has to start from somewhere, and even if you can complete a few reps and sets in the easier of these 4 exercises, it's a position from which you can build! The main factors we see being key to long term success in this area are:
1. Consistency and frequency of training (little and often for bar core, unless you're doing it very heavily weighted).
2. Variety of exercise. Don't always work exactly the same exercise from a bar. Vary the planes of movement, the muscles used and also the speed of exercise.
3. Try to keep your bar core relatively early in a session if you're not an advanced climber as otherwise there is a chance that the shoulders and back may become the limiting factor in the exercise, rather than your core.
