High Intensity Core Training!

Yes, you got that right, there is a time and a place for those higher level athletes to really start looking at the very highest quality and highest intensity core conditioning. A lot of what we do as climbers, is quite a volume-based form of core conditioning and whilst that is still very effective, there's also a time to add in some much harder (and heavier) work to either target very specific muscle groups or to break through a performance plateau.

Most of you reading this, will consider the only high intensity core work as part of your regime being things like front levers or toe-to-bar leg raises. There's no doubting that these are great exercises, but there are also others out there! Tom takes you through 4 of his own personal favourites, two of these having been used to great effect in getting people into the final perfect front lever.

Like all weighted exercise, build up slowly and establish a quality conditioning base before attempting more advanced exercises. The first few sessions should be lower intensity to "learn" the correct form for each movement and once you have this dialled, then slowly and progressively push the difficulty.

If you're using a rope and pulley system you MUST be careful with that weight on the end of your rope! Only do these exercises if you know what you're doing, or stick to thick resistance bands or a standard cable machine in the gym.
