Potassium is a familiar word to most but not well understood by many. Find out what it is and why we need it in this video!

SUMMARY:
Potassium is a mineral that controls how much fluid is inside the cell. Potassium is the fluid controller inside the cells, and sodium is the fluid controller outside. Because these two nutrients are connected in this opposite way, they are usually studied and talked about together.

Potassium effects our body by lowering blood pressure. This means that a high potassium diets can decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. Fresh and dried fruits, beans and lentils, leafy greens, fish, nuts and vegetables are high in potassium.

Some signs and symptoms of low potassium are fatigue, muscle cramps, constipation and irregular heart rhythm. Truthfully if you have a mild deficiency in potassium, you may not notice any symptoms at all. The best way to find out is to speak to your doctor who can do blood tests to find out your potassium levels.

The most common cause is just not getting enough potassium in your diet. You might also experience low potassium if you drink a lot of alcohol, take certain medications like diuretics and laxatives, excessive sweating or vomiting from an illness like the flu or a stomach bug, and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or IBS. The treatment will then depend on how severe your deficiency is.
