This is just a talk about deep litter in a chicken coop, how it looks, how it works, what materials can be in it, how it performs. I'll try to do more along this line, but with more information on how to do this, how to maintain it, why we do it, etc. I apologize for the poor color quality...still not sure what happened to that.
Deep litter isn't just bedding that is deep...not if you want it to work well. That's what I see the most on these videos is deep bedding but that's not really the true definition of deep litter. Deep litter is cultivated, managed and encouraged to decompose in place so that the manure binds with carbonaceous materials. There should be no smell, no flies, no ammonia fumes(not if the ventilation is right) and it shouldn't be wet and moldy.
