Chicken Compost - Deep Litter to Black Gold

Our deep litter system has worked well enough for us for a while. Realizing that we could incorporate the 'waste' of our chicken system with our sprouting system has been a real game changer. Now, when we clean out the coop from deep litter, we are excited to get yet another massive nutrient pulse that can move through our chickens in a healthy and vibrant way!
Building a pile of the deep litter outside, we let it rest and begin cooking for a few days. We let rain get to it to active and charge it, and bulk it out with some sawdust, woodchips, more hay, etc. to get solid carbon levels into it. Once it is cooking along a bit and has a balanced smell, we then add ample soaked grain to it to being sprouting and creating massive interest for our hens. Then by piling and having them kick it apart over and over, it becomes insanely beautiful soil in a few weeks!!!
