The final session on Chapter 11 of the Letter to the Hebrews provides an overview of the chapter. The discussion includes the following topics:
• An additional discussion of the author’s contention that the heroes of the faith looked beyond God’s immediate promises to the city whose foundation is built by God. Our previous discussion focused on individuals displaying this through their behavior (such as continuing to sojourn in the Promised Land even after they arrived in it). However, the second creation story in Genesis suggests that God also draws humankind to himself, to seek something that is beyond themselves.
• A reassessment of faith. Some have argued that faith intrinsically involves belief in God. Faith, however, is merely a reaching out in trust to something outside of oneself. Christian faith involves reaching out in trust to the Triune God.
• We often see faith as an internal state, but for the author, faith is above all expressed in action. Through faith, Christians are called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. This contrasts with the attitude of today’s Christians, who do not see action as an inherent component of faith.
• We discuss the enormous range and diversity of the people of faith selected by the author. From Enoch, who walked with God, to the Shunammite woman, who was faithful enough to feed Elijah but nevertheless blamed him for the death of his son, the author provides models of faith, any one of whom his listeners can emulate. This diversity also suggests that even weak faith is important if it results in correct action in the end.
